Installing Third Party Apps or Apps from Your PC

In this tutorial I will be explaining how to install “Third Party” or applications you’ve downloaded from your computer to your device.

The first thing you want to make sure is that your phone allows Third Party app installations. You can verify that this setting is enabled by doing the following.

Go to Settings -> then Applications, then you should see “Unknown Sources” – “Allow installation of non-Market applications” make sure you have a check next to it.

1. Make sure you have Astro File Manager or another file manager program installed on your device.
2. First mount your device to your PC if you are not sure how please Click here
3. Download the file you are going to placing on your device. Please make sure the file is “.APK”, if it is a zip file you must extract the files on your computer first. Next proceed to copy the file from your computer to anywhere on your SD-Card (Be sure to remember the location of where you placed it).
4. Now that you have the file you are going to be installing, and your device is connected via USB. The next step is opening your “file manager” application on your device. (In our example we are using Astro File Manager) which can be downloaded for free in the market place.
5. Inside of Astro, find the .apk file that you placed on to your device. Click on it.

6. Select Install

7. You should now see a message box that says something similar “Your application has been successfully installed”. That’s it! Your application is now on your device!

** If you get an error message or a “force close” message something is either wrong with the .apk file or it is not supported for your devices model. **

Installing custom Ringones, Notifications & Alarms

* Connect the phone to your computer via the USB cable
* Open the Notifications screen on your phone (drag down notifications from the top of the screen to the bottom) and select the USB Storage notification
* Choose “Mount
* Browse to the SD Card on your PC
* Look for a folder called media, if it’s not there, create it by right clicking and choosing New Folder, then rename the folder to be media
* Inside the media folder, you need a folder called audio, again, if it’s not there create it as above
* Inside the audio folder, you can create a subfolder for the sound category you want to change-
ringtones – for sound files you want to use as ringtones
alarms – for sound files you want to use for any alarms
notifications – for incoming notifications such as SMS alerts, emails, etc
* Copy the sound or music file which you’d like to use as your ringtone in to the relevant folder
* You should now see your sound or music file listed in the menu for selection in the relevant sound settings menu (to access the ringtone/notification settings, press the hard Menu key from one of your home screens, then press Settings then Sounds and Display).

Now once you go to your Settings -> Sounds -> Notifications (or Ringtones) you should notice your custom file that you placed into the specific folder. Just remember the notifications folder is where you install the sounds for your notifications, ringtones folder is where you install the custom ringtone files.
