Here I will explain how install custom Icon packages with the application BetterCut. We use BetterCut because applications update daily in the market, once the update is performed it will replace the icon with its default icon and can be a really pain in the ass switching the icon every day. BetterCut creates basically a shortcut on your device with a custom icon that will never be updated by an application update.

1. The first thing you are going to need to install on your device is BetterCut, you can download from the market or Download via Megaupload
2. Next step is to find the icon packs you are looking to install. You can find a bunch on DroidPirate by clicking here. Or if you already have icons save them anywhere on your SD-Card but make sure you remember where you save them to
3. On your home screen long press anywhere on a open space to bring up the “Add to Home Screen” dialog box. Choose “Shortcuts

4. Now it should be asking you to “Select Shortcut“, Click on “BetterCut

5. You should now be inside the BetterCut application and you should see the following: “Direct Call”, “Direct Text Message”, “Activity”, etc

6. Select “Activity” (Choosing activity will bring up all of your apps installed on your device and a bunch of other apps you’ve probably never seen before)

7. In my example I am going to be changing the icon of “G-Mail“. So select the application you wish to switch the icon of.

8. You should now be at a screen that says “Edit Shortcut”, you will see the following options “Change Icon“, “Create” and “Clear

9. Select “Change Icon” (this is where you will begin the process of switching your apps icon). Once you’ve clicked on Change Icon another dialog window should pop up saying “Choose icon pick action” with the following options “Pick Picture”, “Crop Picture” and “Pick from Iconpack”.

10. You want to Choose the option “Pick Picture” this will bring up your gallery on your SD-Card. Find the folder or icon you placed on your SD-Card and select it. You should notice the icon change inside your BetterCut application. Now click on “Create

11. You should see a notification that says “Shortcut Created Successfully”.

Now go back to your home screen and you should your new kick-ass custom icon. Look at the screen shot below I was switching the stock G-mail icon with an icon of a black & red mailbox and it was successfully created! Enjoy.

** Please note if you currently do not have any room on the home screen where you long pressed to add a shortcut, the shortcut and new icon image will not appear. You must have the appropriate room to add a custom icon on your home screen. **
